Question: What happens if I choose not to join a Medicare prescription drug plan by the December 31st deadline? Can I join later?
Answer:
If you do not join a plan by December 31st, and you don't currently have a drug plan that, on average, covers at least as much as standard Medicare prescription drug coverage, you will have to wait until November 15th of the following year for the next open enrollment period to join. When you do join, your premium cost will go up at least 1% per month for every month that you wait to join. Like other insurance, you will have to pay this penalty as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage. (Source adapted from www.Medicare.gov)

Question: What happens if I turn age 65 during the calendar year? Can I enroll in a Medicare Part D plan right away?
Answer:
Yes. When you turn 65, you automatically have an open enrollment period for electing a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Your open enrollment period begins 3 months before you turn age 65 and it ends 3 months after you turn age 65.
