What is AICPA Spouse Life?

Spouse Life, issued by The Prudential Insurance Company of America (Prudential), is endorsed by the AICPA and can help provide financial security for you, your children, dependent parents, and other loved ones.

What it covers?

  • Up to $2.5 million of coverage

    • Multiple coverage amounts up to $2.5 million are available at competitive group-negotiated rates. The maximum amount of coverage available is based on your spouse's age and your membership. The amount of Spouse coverage cannot exceed the amount you are eligible for as a member.

  • Coverage up to age 80 for your spouse 

    • Even if you change jobs or retire as long as you maintain your membership(s).

  • Accelerated Death Benefit Option for Terminal Illness

    • No-cost option allows participants who become terminally ill while covered to get a portion of their Life Insurance benefit in one lump sum. Your spouse's death benefit will be reduced by the amount that they receive. Your spouse can receive a portion that does not exceed 75% of their Life Insurance amount or $1 million, whichever is less.

  • Optional Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage

    • Doubles your spouse’s Life Insurance benefit amount if your spouse dies by accident; suffers the loss of both hands, both feet, sight in both eyes; suffers the loss of one hand and one foot, one hand and sight in one eye, or one foot and sight in one eye.

  • Income Tax-free benefits

    • Under current Federal Income Tax rules, the death benefit is generally free from income tax (IRC Section 101(a)).

What it costs?

AICPA Spouse Life rates are lower than what you may expect to find elsewhere. For example, monthly rates start at $8.00 for females and $10.00 for males, for $500,000 in coverage.** Annual Cash Refunds may help lower your cost of insurance. 

The AICPA Insurance Trust (Trust) reviews a number of factors in determining the amount, if any, of Annual Cash Refunds, such as premiums, claims, expenses, and other charges. These refunds vary year to year and are not guaranteed. The Trust has paid Annual Cash Refunds every year since each Life Insurance Plan’s inception. However, the Trust may suspend the distribution of Annual Cash Refunds at any time. These refunds could vary based on the premium you pay, and when premiums are lowered, refunds may decrease as well.

Who is eligible for AICPA Spouse Life?

Spouses or Partners under age 75 who don’t already qualify for an AICPA Life Insurance Plan are eligible for coverage. 

To apply, you must maintain your membership in AICPA, a state society of CPAs, or other eligible organization. And your spouse or Partner must be living in eligible states or territories. 

Either a spouse or a Domestic Partner are eligible for coverage under the Spouse Life Plan. 

These are the persons for whom you may obtain Dependents Insurance:

  • Your spouse or Domestic Partner.

Your Domestic Partner is a person of the same or opposite sex who:

  1. you report in an affidavit of domestic partnership satisfactory to Prudential; and
  2. is in a single dedicated, serious and committed relationship with you of at least 12 months; and
  3. has shared a single permanent residence with you for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the person's enrollment in the Program; and
  4. is an unmarried adult age 18 or older; and
  5. is not related to you by blood or a degree of closeness that would prohibit marriage in the law of the state in which you reside; and
  6. is mentally competent to consent to contract; and
  7. is not married to another person under statutory or common law nor in a domestic partnership with another person; and
  8. is financially interdependent with you; and
  9. is not otherwise a Qualified Dependent under the Program.

Most members and their spouses/partners who apply for coverage under Select rates and those with Preferred rates that are age 40-44 can expect to be approved based on their answers to health questions – and could be approved without a medical exam. There may be the option to provide medical evidence. In the event your application is not approved, you may provide additional medical evidence. For ages 45 and over, to qualify for our lowest rates under the Preferred rate class, you will need to undergo a medical exam.

You don’t need to submit a new application to keep your Spouse Life Plan. If you currently pay Select rates, you will need to resubmit proof of good health every 10 years; Preferred rates require proof of excellent health every 10 years. If you are not approved for Select or Preferred rates, you can still maintain your Life Insurance coverage, as long as you remain eligible.

Yes, as long as the combined coverage amount doesn’t exceed the maximum amount available based on your spouse's age and your memberships.  The amount of Spouse coverage cannot exceed the amount you are eligible for as a member. 

Yes. Your spouse’s Life Insurance coverage continues until he/she reaches age 80. 

Yes. Spouse Life has “step rates,” which increase in five-year age bands starting at age 30. At age 50, rates increase annually. You can view the rates for each age group here.

Accelerated Benefit option is a feature that is made available to Group Life Insurance participants. It is not a health, nursing home, or long-term care insurance benefit and is not designed to eliminate the need for those types of insurance coverage.
The death benefit is reduced by the amount of the accelerated death benefit paid. There is no administrative fee to accelerate benefits. Receipt of accelerated death benefits may affect eligibility for public assistance and may be taxable. The federal income tax treatment of payments made under this rider depends upon whether the insured is the recipient of the benefits and is considered “terminally ill”. You may wish to seek professional tax advice before exercising this option.
